FRIENDS is one of the most iconic sitcoms of all time. It is stuffed with humor, drama, and six main characters who pull on your heartstrings. Their fights, romances, and slapstick moments defined our taste in entertainment. They always stuck with each other through thick and thin. That is why we also had to stick with them through occasional awkward moments and embarrassing scenes. As new viewers, we sit through a ton of scenes that today seem like cliches and were uncomfortable, to begin with.

FRIENDS still delivers these scenes with more charm than any other show. Perhaps that is why it is still one of the most-binge watched TV series of all time. We have made a list of some of the most embarrassing moments from FRIENDS.

1. When Ross Says The Wrong Name

Most girls fantasize about the “most important day of their lives” from a very young age. However, Emily surely never planned on what Ross would do at their wedding. When Ross exclaimed “Rachel” instead of “Emily” during his vows, in front of all the members of his and her family and friends, her dream day soon turned into the most uncomfortable nightmare. Undoubtedly, the whole situation was extremely humiliating for Emily. The most tragic part is that they agreed to proceed with the wedding and ultimately, everything again ended Ross style, with a divorce.

2. When Everybody Made Fat Monica Jokes

FRIENDS creators made sure we know that if Monica didn’t shed her high school pounds, then she would have been miserable. Because there’s no way anybody will love you if you are overweight. You’re destined for a celibate existence filled with awkward dance parties and “fat sister” jokes. Of course, this is not true. This show had fat-shamed teenage Monica so much that she started to feel weird about herself.

3. When Frank Jr. Made Out With His Teacher

We all know that Pheobe’s younger brother Frank Jr. is that guy who was dating his much older teacher. However, it does not end here. The two of them decide to get married and have children in season three. Both FRIENDS and the audience surely cringed a lot while seeing their make-out sessions. Without judging, no one wants to see these two in a middle of a tongue war.

4. When Phoebe Is Pretending To Seduce Chandler

In this episode, the level of discomfort between Pheobe and Chandler was quite high, but the whole thing turned out to be really entertaining for viewers. Besides that awkward and unwatchable kiss. The whole idea of trying to seduce your friend just to confirm if they’re loyal to your other friend is over the top weird. Also, Pheobe’s resolve to see the thing through was surely a ticket to huge embarrassment.

5. When Rachel Was Trying To Get Joshua’s Attention

Season four includes some of the most desperate Rachel moments in the show. And the cherry on the cake would have to be the episode “The one with the fake party”. The episode revolves around Rachel’s failed attempts of seducing Joshua during the fake “bon-voyage-Emily” party. She desperately tried to get Joshua’s attention by putting on a sexy dress and then, a high school cheerleader outfit. That’s not all, she trips and bites her lip really hard after performing a cheerleading act in front of everyone. Maybe it wasn’t embarrassing for Rachel but it surely was for all her fans.

6. When They Had The Wrong Attitude For Chandler’s Dad

Chandler’s dad, Charles was the subject of constant ridicule on the show. He was a drag queen at a Las Vegas club where people weren’t making jabs at Charles’s appearance. But it was when Chandler says sarcastically, “There’s daddy”. When he and Monica first see Charles perform, they offensively question his identity. Again in season seven, Chandler’s mom, Nora, says to Charles, “Don’t you have a little too much p*nis to be wearing a dress like that?” How can the show even think that queer people are punch lines?

7. When Monica Gets Stung By A Jellyfish

The season four episode “The one with the Jellyfish” provided us with one of the most famous FRIENDS cringe moments ever. It is the one when Monica was stung by a jellyfish at the beach and Chandler peed on her to her aid. You could cut the tension with a knife while Joey, Chandler, and Monica were retelling their embarrassing secret to the rest of their friends. Fun Fact: A jellyfish sting should never be treated by the “golden shower”. Their tentacles can activate in your skin because of the salt in your urine, which would sting you even more because of the venom it releases and makes the wound worse.

8. When Rachel And Joey End Up Together

The cringe is the best definition of the relationship between these two. Most FRIENDS fans felt that Joey and Rachel’s relationship was the worst plot in the entire series. Nevertheless, even FRIENDS cast also considered their scenes unwatchable. It may have started to get cringy with either the time when Joey proposes in “The One Where No One Proposes” or when they first kissed in “The One After Joey And Rachel Kiss”. Fortunately, the whole awkward situation ended soon and left us fans in cringe-recovery.

9. When Officer Goodbody Did His Striptease Dance

Knowing the eccentric Pheobe Buffay, it only makes sense that her bachelorette party would be bizarre. However, we never expected to see Danny Devito appear as a middle-aged stripper named Roy in the show. His “exotic” dance was extremely uncomfortable to the ladies. Not just that, his own reaction was awkward as well. This scene is a perfect example of how unusual FRIENDS can be.

10. When Monica Finds Out Who Her Midnight Mystery Kisser Was

This season ten episode contains one scene that’s perhaps even more awkward than the uncomfortable moments in “The One Where the Stripper Cries”. While talking with Chandler and Ross, Monica finally finds out who her midnight mystery kisser was on that faithful night in 1987. It was kind of a shock to know that it was her own brother, Ross. The information not only led to disgust among all three, but everyone watching the show.

11. When Monica Was Aroused While Phoebe Massaged Her

Phoebe never suspected she’d regret her decision to massage Monica. In the episode “The One With The Secret Closet”, Monica enjoys massages so much that she starts expressing her pleasure with extremely inappropriate noises. And to make it more cringy, Phoebe decides to fight fire with fire by saying, “Yeah, say my name. Say it!” However, she quickly realized how awkward things have gotten and says, “and now I’m going to cover you back up, and, um, I won’t be speaking to you for several weeks.”

12. When Monica Counted To Seven

Monica’s the person to ask if you need to know what makes it go from “nice” to “My God, somebody’s killing her in there!” or you can simply watch the episode “The One With Pheobe’s Uterus.” In this episode, Monica was trying to help Chandler by revealing the seven erogenous zones on a woman’s body. We praise Courtney Cox for her performance in this extremely amusing scene, but we have to admit that any encounter in real life where your friend is screaming “SEVEN, SEVEN, SEVEN-SEVEN…!” will be one of the most embarrassing moments ever.

The main six stars of the sitcom FRIENDS Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, are icons. We’re so used to know them as the famous six that it’s unbelievable for us that anybody else could ever fit in to play Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, Chandler, Ross, and Joey. You like FRIENDS just the way it is, as Mark Darcy from Bridget Jones would say. Despite storylines that keep you up at night and some of the inconsistencies, it is just perfect.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t always meant to be the way it turned out. FRIENDS creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, at the very beginning, wanted to cast different actors as Monica Geller, Chandler Bing, Ross Geller, Rachel Green, Phoebe Buffay, and Joey Tribbiani. Hundreds of actors auditioned for these iconic roles that lead the six actors to ultimate stardom. There were moments when the directors almost made a different choice and there were also moments when the present cast faced situations that kept them away from the show. However, things turned out the way it is now and for some of the actors who almost got it, they eventually appeared on the show in some different celebrity cameos.

It’s impossible to imagine anyone other than the original cast portraying the classic characters in the show. That is why check out the list of actors who almost replaced the original FRIENDS cast:

1. Jane Krakowski – Rachel Green And Phoebe Buffay

At the 2015 Emmys, Jane revealed to Giuliana Rancic that she auditioned to play the part of Jennifer Aniston. She said, “I, like almost every actor in the world, auditioned for FRIENDS. I wish I had gotten that one. I actually auditioned for Rachel and didn’t go very far.” Allegedly, the show creators had Jane in mind for the role of Phoebe as well.

2. Ellen DeGeneres – Phoebe Buffay

Reportedly, the role of Phoebe Buffay was offered to Ellen DeGeneres from the famous “The Ellen Show”. According to Refinery, she turned down the role. Phoebe was originally supposed to be goth as per the revelation of the publication. However, Lisa Kudrow appeared in the show later as Phoebe Buffay.

3. Leah Remini – Monica Geller

The “King Of Queens” star also auditioned to play Monica. However, she was ultimately not chosen. If you have not forgotten, she did appear on the show in the episode “The One With the Birth”. In this episode, she gives birth to a child with Joey beside him, while Ross welcomes his son Ben into the world.

4. Jon Cryer – Chandler Bing

The “Two And A Half Men” star revealed in an interview, “I was doing a play in London and got a call at 3 a.m. saying ‘We’ve got this show called ‘Six Of One”, and we’d really like you to audition for it.” He further continued, “So they faxed me the script, and I said, ‘Sure, I’d love to go in on this.’ I went in and read with a British casting person; they took the tape and said they’d get it to L.A.” He explained with disappointment, “So I went home, and a few days later was told the tape didn’t get there in time for the network executives to see.”

5. Eric McCormack – Ross Geller

Eric McCormack auditioned to play Ross Geller before he hit the big time in “Will & Grace”. However, he revealed that it actually looked like the part was written with David Schwimmer in mind. In the interview with HuffPost, he said, “I needed to start pulling at this other sort of funnier, lighter side. So I auditioned for everything. I auditioned for FRIENDS even. I auditioned for Schwimmer’s part.” He further said, “Years later, I told Jimmy Burrows, who directed all of ‘Will & Grace’ and FRIENDS too that I was up for Schwimmer’s part. He said, ‘Oh, honey, you’re wasting your time. They wrote the part for him.’”

6. Vince Vaughn – Joey Tribbiani

FRIENDS casting director Ellie Kanner told Huffington Post that Vince Vaughn auditioned to play Joey. Even though he was handsome and tall, he just didn’t fit the part as Matt Le Blanc did. She said, “It’s just a matter of putting the pieces of the puzzle together. That would have been a little different.”

7. Courtney Cox – Rachel Green

The casting directors actually wanted Courtney to play Rachel. But it was only when she auditioned as Monica and brought whole new colors and emotions to the role, she got the part of Monica Geller. Kauffman said, “We originally offered Rachel to Courteney Cox, but she said she wanted to do Monica, not Rachel”.

8. Jon Favreau – Chandler Bing

The actor and director, Jon Favreau was offered the role of Chandler. However, he turned it down to focus on other projects. However, he appeared on the show in a guest star cameo as Monica’s super-rich boyfriend, Peter.

9. Hank Azaria – Joey Tribbiani

The actor has had many successful roles in huge movies. However, couldn’t catch a break with FRIENDS creators. Azaria told HuffPost Live in 2014, “That’s the only job I ever auditioned for twice. I thought it was so good. They had rejected me once, I said, ‘I’m going back, I’m gonna do it again, I’m gonna try it again.” However, he got a cameo as Phoebe’s Science Guy, David.

10. Nancy McKeon – Monica Geller

Lori Openden, head of casting for NBC said, “Nancy McKeon also read for Courteney’s part. She gave a terrific performance. Warren Littlefield let Marta Kauffman and David Crane make the call. They went off for a walk and came back and said Courteney.”

11. Kathy Griffin – Phoebe Buffay

Kathy Griffin revealed during a chat with Huff Post Live that both she and Jane Lynch auditioned to be Phoebe. While commenting on their friendship, she said, “I’ve known Jane since we were both auditioning. I think we were auditioning for Phoebe on FRIENDS as all my other girlfriends did.”

12. Craig Bierko – Chandler Bing

The writers of FRIENDS revealed, “We brought everybody in. We were so sure that Chandler would be the easiest part to cast. It’s got the most joke jokes, but no one could do it. No one.” However, Craig Bierko got the closest who was apparently coached by Matthew Perry himself. He passed the reading but was not chosen in the end.

Honestly, we can never imagine anyone else playing these iconic roles of these evergreen characters. They are not just actors anymore. They have become a part of our life and love. There’s no one in the world who can replace those six people from our memories and hearts.

Apart from these amazing prestigious awards bagged by FRIENDS, Jennifer Aniston also won Aftonbladet TV Prize Awards under the category of “Best Foreign Television Personality – Female” for 4 consecutive years, that is, from 2001 to 2004. However, after what seems like a lifetime, “FRIENDS: The Reunion” finally happened on May 27, 2021. The show was host by James Corden and streamed on HBO Max. The special was initially confirmed in February 2020. Unfortunately, then COVID happened, and the whole world was on a break. The reunion was back in March this year with all six original cast members, that is, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston, and David Schwimmer. They reunited on the original FRIENDS set at Stage 24, Warner Bros Studio. The reunion special was directed by Ben Winston which featured FRIENDS guest stars, dozens of celebrity cameos, and delighted fans in the audience to watch their favorite friends unite.

It would have been brilliant to have seen the actor talk about his erratic character and what his character and his triplets would be doing today. However, Ribisi is a busy man just like Paul Rudd, as he’s currently filming both “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3”.

In the final episodes of the FRIENDS show, Monica and Chandler hired movers to pack everything up in boxes and take all of their belongings to the new house. Last we know, Monica secretly tips one of the movers to let the dog statue fall off the back of the truck. When it comes to props and art in the show, this dog statue is one of the iconic props, and fans needed to know if it’s sitting somewhere in their family home or the statue really did fall off the truck. At the reunion, there was so much reminiscing. When the cast saw the set for the first time in 17 years, they felt as nostalgic as the fans, but it seemed as if they held some kind of resentment towards a couple of storylines. We all know at this point that Ross despised working with Marcel, the monkey. However, there must be other episodes as well that the cast didn’t enjoy shooting. If you have seen the “Joey” series then you will know that there were so many weird things in there. It felt like it was a completely different entity to FRIENDS. One of the biggest reveals in the reunion was that Matthew Perry was cast in another sitcom at the same time, just like Jennifer Aniston. Though the sitcom “Muddling Through” lasted for a whole season in which Aniston was cast, Perry’s sitcom was nothing more than a failed pilot. Despite this fact, “LAX 2194” looks bizarre and fascinating at the same time. The story revolves around a luggage handler catering for Aliens who are traveling to Earth for vacation, and by the way, the luggage handler is Matthew Perry. In the FRIENDS reunion, there was small footage of the pilot and now, fans want to see more of it. Also, given the advancement in technology and the acceptance of vivid storylines in Hollywood, it might not be the worst idea to revive that series now. Given the fact that Matthew might be involved is enough to get the marketing attention it needs to succeed.

They’re global superstars now, and always will be. However, there was a time when the cast of FRIENDS was relatively young and unknown. Although none of them did anything monumental until 1994, they were all acting before they landed roles on one of the most classic sitcoms ever.

In an interview with New Beauty in 2017, Cox revealed that she was taking advice from the wrong people and eventually became addicted to surgery. She said, “Well, what would end up happening is that you go to a doctor who would say, ‘You look great, but what would help is a little injection here or filler there.’ So you walk out and you don’t look so bad and you think, no one noticed—it’s good.” She further explained, “Then somebody tells you about another doctor: ‘This person’s amazing. They do this person who looks so natural.’ You meet them and they say, ‘You should just do this.’ The next thing you know, you’re layered and layered and layered.”

She confessed, “You have no idea because it’s gradual until you go, ‘Oh s–t, this doesn’t look right.’ And it’s worse in pictures than in real life. I have one friend who was like, ‘Whoa, no more!’ I thought I haven’t done anything in six months. I didn’t realize.” Finally, she stopped doing the fillers and embraced her real self.

What Was The Process Courteney Cox Did?

Dr. Daniel Lanzer, Dermatologist surgeon said that Courteney has had filler injected into her lips, cheeks, and around her eyes. Perhaps, she also had a “mini facelift”, says Dr. Lanzer. It is a hugely popular procedure that offers far more natural results than the classic dramatic facelifts. He said, “We really work on the lower face and neck and only lift up a couple of centimeters of skin and put a couple of stitches on the muscle. We’re not going very deep.”

Since Cox wanted to look natural, she did not do anything deeps. Dr. Lanzer also said that this trend is quite common among people. He said, “There’s a huge drive for people to look natural. Patients come to me and say ‘I want to look better, but I don’t want anyone to notice that I’ve had work done. They just want to notice that you look healthier and better overall.”

4. There Would Have Been Less Baggage With Gunther

Sometimes dating a person in the same social group and with lots of past, can make it difficult to work things out. Ross and Rachel were in the same social circle. They made it difficult for everyone when they went through ups and downs. Also, with Ross’s failed marriage to Carol, it was hard to deal with him because of his trust issues. That is why it might be a lot more peaceful for Rachel to date Gunther instead of Ross.

5. Gunther Was Funnier Than Ross

Ross complains a lot and seems sad most of the time. Also, he’s not everyone’s favorite FRIENDS character when it comes to being funny. However, when it comes to Gunther, he seems funnier than Ross. At least in the scenes that we’ve seen him in. He would have provided more comic relief to Rachel than Ross. 7. He Always Did Sweetest Things For Rachel

Remember the time when he adopted Mrs. Wiskerson from Rachel without any complaint? That too for $1500, making it a loss for himself. While Ross was just bugging her by saying how irresponsible she was for spending money on the cat. He didn’t even help her get rid of the so-called cat. But Gunther’s gesture on the other hand was just one of the sweetest things he did for Rachel.

8. He Showed His Agitation Alone

When it comes to Gunther’s love for Rachel, he always reacted negatively to every moment where Rachel was asked out by some other guy before he could approach. Remember when Gunther fired Joey for closing the shop before time? Rachel stepped up and tried to talk Gunther into rehiring Joey while pointing out his mistake as an employer. Gunther’s love was almost like, ‘No Questions Asked!’ kind, where he had immense trust and love for Rachel. Unlike Ross, who needs an explanation for everything.

10. He Was Better Option Than Others As Well

Gunther would have been far better given the choices Rachel made throughout the series. We don’t want to name the guys whom we can count on the miserable boyfriend list but you know it already. Gunther could have easily proved his above many guys only if he could have got that one chance. We all had tears in our eyes when Gunther made his confession in the last episode. It was so peaceful to finally see him confessing his love for Rachel. He would have surely been an amazing boyfriend to Rachel.

Well, Rachel & Gunther’s relationship is something we have always adored. The creators could have given at least one episode to this if not the whole season. We know Gunther would not be the final choice Rachel makes but he deserved to be on the list at least for once. His love was pure but didn’t get the chance to flourish.

Recently, appearing on the Today show on June 21, 2021, he revealed that he is suffering from stage four prostate cancer. The actor opened up about his battle with the disease in the interview. The 59-year-old told host Craig Melvin that in September 2018, he got diagnosed with prostate cancer. James was told that he had advanced prostate cancer while getting a routine check-up, and that had spread to his bones.

He also appeared virtually on the HBO Max “Friends: The Reunion”. He said the reason that he did not appear physically at the reunion was because of his illness as he didn’t want to be a downer. He said, “I wanted to be a part of that, and initially I was going to be on the stage, at least, with them, and be able to take part in all the festivities. It was bittersweet, honestly. I was very happy to be included.” He further added, “It was my decision not to be a part of that physically and make an appearance on Zoom, basically, because I didn’t wanna bring a downer on it, you know? I didn’t want to be like, ‘Oh, and by the way, Gunther has cancer.'”

Even though Tyler was not one of the friends in the FRIENDS show, fans loved him throughout the series. From buying Rachel’s so-called cat out of his love for her to breaking glasses in the back of the kitchen when someone asked Rachel out, he always managed to make a remarkable presence in the show. Right now, he is dealing with prostate cancer, but we know he is a fighter, and he will get through it. Keep praying for our GUNTHER!
